British and Irish Graduates in America was formed in 2005 as a network for graduates, former students and staff of universities and other higher education institutions in Britain and Ireland who are now living in the USA.

Several British and Irish colleges and universities with larger numbers of alumni in the USA have formal or informal alumni organizations in America. In the past, these groups seldom co-operated to provide their members with the benefits of the extended community of people with shared educational and cultural experiences in Britain and Ireland. Moreover, many colleges and universities have neither organized nor informal alumni groups in America, or where they do exist, they tend to be in name only to provide tax benefits for fundraising.

BIG in America was formed to address this gap. BIG in America is not a membership organization: we encourage alumni groups to form their own associations to celebrate and support their own institutions. We aim to provide a helpful resource by enabling connections between existing alumni groups and providing a forum for sharing knowledge and experience. We focus on cultivating links between the individual alumni groups of British and Irish colleges and universities to enable them to co-operate in functions and services on a larger scale, and which are also open to former students and staff of all British and Irish third level colleges and universities, whether or not they have their own alumni groups.
