Sun, 2007-04-29 10:27 — Peter HirstSite upgrades
Tue, 2007-04-24 22:01 — Peter HirstThis site is built using the free open source Drupal and CiviCRM software. These are under constant development, and occasionally we need to install a significant upgrade to keep pace with the latest versions. This is a requirement for maintaining security of the site, and typically also adds many new features and improvements. Today we have committed a (some might say brave!) double upgrade: from Drupal 4.7 to Drupal 5.1, and from CiviCRM 1.5 to CiviCRM 1.7.
Disney Channel is looking for kids for a new TV show!
Wed, 2006-12-13 19:17 — Peter Hirst**Disney Channel is looking for kids for a new TV show!**
_We received this request, which we are happy to pass along to our community!_
Disney’s new show, “The Really Short Report” will be kids reporting all the latest news and goings-on in “Disney” around the world. We need kids who were born other countries, and now live in the United States. We are looking for kids from, but not limited to, Italy, Australia and Great Britain. Interested kids will be asked to read a script on camera and send in videotapes or video files. When picked, they will be put on a well-compensated contract with Disney Channel and flown in to Los Angeles every time we record a show. The show will air in the United States and around the world on Disney Channel. We are looking for interested kids between ages 8 and 14 that have full legal /visa status to work in the U.S.
Site Upgrades
Sun, 2006-10-08 20:37 — Peter HirstOver the last week, biginamerica.net has gone through a significant upgrade of the underlying technical system. From a user perspective, the most obvious change is the visual design of the site, which is now much cleaner and easier on the eye. The anti-spam e-mail protection has changed: e-mail addresses posted on the site are now visible and clickable, yet are also encoded to prevent them from being harvested by automated 'spam bots'. For the time being, the "wysiwyg" text editor has been disabled as it was slow and did not provide reliable formatting. The default text editor now uses the "Textile" mark-up system, which means most text, web-links and e-mail addresses are simply typed as plain text.
What expats miss about home...
Fri, 2006-08-04 07:04 — Peter HirstWhat expats miss about home... - There are thousands of Britons in Florida. But what do they miss? [BBC News]
A highly scientific poll in Florida's British Depot conducted by the BBC reveals what your "average" British expat misses about the old country. Perhaps there is just a little selection bias, given that the BBC chose to conduct their poll in a retail store. Sadly, this is what folks back home seem to think of us intrepid pioneers!
More anti-spam privacy protection
Thu, 2006-06-08 22:07 — Peter HirstI have just added an extra layer of spam protection to disguise e-mail addresses that users may deliberately or inadvertently post in submissions. Henceforth, all e-mail addresses such as this one admin@biginamerica.net in postings will automatically be converted to a secure link that can only be opened by registered users. This should prevent harvesting of email addresses from our site by spam bots. We value our time and privacy here!
Deftly avoiding the "Doh!" moment, there is a new feedback form so that people who can't or don't want to register on the site can still send us messages
What you see is what you get
Thu, 2006-06-08 21:11 — Peter HirstMost text entry boxes that you will encounter when submitting content to this site have now been updated to a 'wysiwyg' editor that makes inputting, formatting and checking submissions very much easier. The tool bar in the wysiwyg window is very similar to the familiar Word toolbar, and the meanings of the icons are mostly self-evident. If in doubt, hovering over a toolbar icon displays a hint. You can also copy and paste text (and images!) from Word etc. into the wysiwyg window, and the software will usually sort out the formatting and provide a reasonable rendition of the original content. As usual, let me know how you get on with this feature.
Spam, spam, spam
Thu, 2006-06-08 20:32 — Peter Hirst... but alas not of the Monty Python variety. Today our site has been attacked by evil, hateful spammers posting over 300 messages in a short time. In addition to messing with our carefully crafted site aesthetic (ahem!) such attacks place unreasonable demands on our server. Worse still, they risk damaging our site's hard-earned search engine rankings by overwhelming the site with junk content. We hate spammers!!!
Having deleted the offending (and offensive) content I have activated aggressive anti-spam protection on this site. This is very clever software that uses artificial intelligence to spot probable spam while it is being posted. Unfortunately there will be a slight performance impact due to the extra processing required. Hopefully, this will not be too noticeable for legitimate users. Meanwhile I will gradually ease the spam restrictions until I find a happy medium between protection and use ability.
