Boston College Club view2

A British and Irish Graduates in America business and social networking evening and launch party will be held in the Boston College Club on Tuesday evening, June 20th, 2006. We'll provide a distinguished guest speaker and some food and refreshments to get you started, and a cash bar to keep you going through the night. This is a great way to meet other British and Irish graduates from the Boston area.

This is also an opportunity to meet and learn from alumni organizers from other universities, find alumni from your own institution you may not have known existed, and get involved with BIG in America.  Other distinguished guests include Mr John Rankin, HM Consul General and Ms Marianne Bolger, Vice Consul for Ireland in Boston.

This event will also mark the launch of the BIG Ball 2006.  Following the blinding success of the inaugural British and Irish Universities Ball last year (see for yourself), the re-dubbed British and Irish Graduates Ball is scheduled for 3 November, 2006 at the Seaport Hotel, Boston. The Ball is only possible due to the efforts of our volunteer commmittee and support from university and business sponsorship. To get the ball rolling, everyone who attends the networking evening at the Boston  College Club will get a chance to win the first two tickets to BIG Ball 2006.

Mary O'Herlihy
Mary O'Herlihy is Director of the Irish Institute, the executive education arm of Boston College's Center for Irish Programs. The Institute provides political, corporate, and educational development and exchange programs with Ireland and Northern Ireland to promote peace and normalization, contribute to cross-border cooperation, and enhance mutual understanding between Ireland, Northern Ireland and the US.

A native of Cork, Ireland, O'Herlihy graduated from the National University of Ireland, Cork in 1994 with a bachelor's degree in English and German, and in 1996 with a Masters in English. She attended Boston College from 1998-2000 as a recipient of the Fr. Martin Harney Graduate Fellowship for doctoral work in English.

In 2004, O'Herlihy was named one of the Top 100 Irish Americans by Irish America Magazine, joining Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg, television personality Conan O'Brien, journalist Tim Russert, actress Bonnie Hunt and NASA Administrator Sean O'Keefe as among those recognized in the publication's annual salute to Americans in politics, the arts, business, service and other fields for their contributions to the Irish community as a whole.

Previously O'Herlihy was Director of Publications and Research Associate at the Boston College Social Welfare Research Institute, the nation's leading source of qualitative and quantitative data on individual charitable giving. She has been a frequent writer and speaker on trends and patterns in charitable giving, on donor motivation and fundraising, and on philanthropy by the wealthy.
